Monroe County to Host Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Monroe County to Host Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks today announced that the County’s Department of Environmental Services, together with the Town of Irondequoit will hold an appointment-only Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Town of Irondequoit Highway Garage, 25 Kings Highway, on Saturday, November 17, 2007 from 8 a.m. to noon.

“This collection will offer local residents the opportunity to dispose of potentially hazardous chemicals in a safe manner,” County Executive Brooks stated. “By keeping these materials away from our landfills, we are continuing our successful efforts to protect the air we breathe, and the water we drink.”

Most household hazardous waste, such as paint, is safe when used and stored properly. When these materials become unwanted and are disposed of improperly, these household wastes can become environmental hazards.

Last year, the County Department of Environmental Services, in cooperation with Eastman Kodak Company, safely disposed of 293 tons of hazardous material.

To ensure safety and reduce waiting times, appointments are required at all household hazardous waste collections. Appointments for this collection will be accepted until November 16th. To schedule an appointment, residents should call the Town of Irondequoit at 336-6033. Waste from businesses will not be accepted.

Up to 30 gallons of the following materials will be accepted per appointment at no charge:
