Brooks Announces Southwest Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Brooks Announces Southwest Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that the County’s Department of Environmental Services (DES) will collaborate with the towns of Gates, Chili, Wheatland, Riga and the villages of Scottsville and Churchville for an appointment only ,  mobile Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Gates Highway Garage, 475 Trabold Road on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Most HHW (paint, flammables and other chemicals for home-use) is safe when used and stored properly.  When they become unwanted and are improperly disposed, these household wastes have the potential to become environmental hazards.

“Collections like this give residents the opportunity to dispose of potentially hazardous chemicals in a safe manner, and extends the useful life of our County landfill,” said Brooks .   “This program is another example of how Monroe County is working with our local municipalities to meet the needs of residents.”

Appointments are required  to ensure safety and limit waiting times at all HHW collection sites.  Appointments for this collection will be accepted until September 19 , 2008.  Residents should call the Town of Gates at 247-2911 to schedule an appointment.  Waste from businesses will not be accepted.
