Brooks Announces Household Hazardous Waste Collection in Irondequoit

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that the County’s Department of Environmental (DES) services has partnered with the Town of Irondequoit to hold a free, appointment-only Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the town’s Department of Public Works on 25 Kings Highway, on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

“This program shows how Monroe County remains dedicated to making our community a more sustainable place by offering residents a chance to safely dispose of unwanted and unused hazardous household waste,” said Brooks. “This collection also shows how the County is teaming up with our local municipalities to better serve our residents.”

Most HHW is safe when used and stored properly, but may turn into environmental hazards when they become unwanted and/or are improperly disposed. This free collection is open to all Monroe County residents. Appointments must be made by October 16th; and must be made by calling the Town of Irondequoit at (585) 336-6033 or by clicking on a link at www.MonroeCounty.gov/hhw.

Up to 30 gallons of the following materials will be accepted at no charge:

  • Oil-based and latex paint
  • Wood stain and preservatives
  • Antifreeze, brake and transmission fluids
  • Pesticides and fertilizers
  • Kerosene, thinners and solvents
  • Household cleaners and driveway sealer
  • Pool and photo chemicals
  • Rechargeable (Ni-Cad) and button batteries
  • Thermometers and thermostats
  • Safely packaged syringes and sharps

Waste from businesses will not be accepted. Residents are asked not to bring:

  • Used motor oil and vehicle batteries
  • Propane tanks (permanent HHW facility only)
  • Empty containers
  • Alkaline batteries
  • Glazing spackle and joint compounds
