Brooks Announces Rochester Precision Optics is Business of the Month
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that Rochester Precision
Optics, LLC (RPO) has been named Monroe County’s “Business of the Month.” RPO manufactures precision molded and machined optics and optical components.
“RPO’s acquisition of a portion of Kodak’s manufacturing assets has positively impacted
our local economy by recovering lost jobs and maintaining our region’s manufacturing
capabilities,” said Monroe County Executive Brooks. “I am proud to have such a
remarkable company here in Monroe County and I thank Bill Hurley for his continued
commitment and investment in our community.”
RPO was founded by William Hurley in 2005 after purchasing the assets of Eastman
Kodak Company’s precision glass manufacturing unit. Since the acquisition, RPO has
hired back 40 former Kodak employees. RPO considered relocating to New Hampshire,
but decided to stay local after considering Monroe County’s highly-skilled work force
and competitive incentives provided by New York State, Monroe County, and RG&E.
“We considered moving the equipment and jobs to New Hampshire, but the government
and private incentives offered, along with the tremendously talented work force already in
place, convinced us to continue to do business in Monroe County,” said William Hurley,
RPO occupies a 65,000 square foot facility at 850 John Street in Henrietta. RPO has
invested nearly $16 million in site improvements and equipment. Today, RPO employs
over 120 people in Monroe County and has added 16 new jobs in 2010.
New York State has led the world in optics and imaging for over 100 years. More than
62,000 New Yorkers work in this industry with half concentrated in the Rochester and
Finger Lakes region.
