Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks was joined by County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo and County Legislator Steve Tucciarello to kick off the ninth annual “Coats for Seniors” program. The initiative, sponsored by the Monroe County Office for the Aging and Medical Motors, will once again collect and distribute donated winter coats to seniors in need throughout Monroe County.
“In response to input from our seniors, we are kicking off the Coats for Seniors program earlier in the fall season to ensure those in need of a coat or jacket have access to proper protection from the elements.” said Brooks. “The continual generosity of this community to support area seniors embodies the very spirit of giving Monroe County residents are known for.”
Donations of new and gently-used adult-sized coats will be accepted weekdays between 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at participating senior centers. Donation boxes will also be set up in the atrium of the Monroe County Office Building, located downtown at 39 West Main Street; The Monroe County Office for the Aging at Monroe Community Hospital, located at 435 East Henrietta Road; and Colony Dry Cleaners, located at 695 Howard Road in Gates. The program runs from October 17, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
“I’m proud to be a part of this program which provides much needed coats to our seniors,” said Monroe County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo. “The kindness of Monroe County residents is seen throughout the year and continues during the holiday season. It’s heartwarming to know that our community continues to give back and support those in need which is greatly appreciated.”
Dinolfo is a member of the Monroe County Council of Elders, an advisory group comprised of community leaders and advocates for seniors.
The Monroe County Coats for Seniors program has collected over 4,600 coats which have been generously donated by local residents. At the end of the program, any additional coats that have not been selected by a senior will be donated to local shelters and clothing closets.
