Brooks Announces Free Pharmaceutical Waste Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services (DES) and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) have partnered to hold a special pharmaceutical waste collection event on Friday, November 2nd from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the RIT campus (Lot H off Jefferson Road).

“This pharmaceutical collection event being held in partnership with RIT will continue to build upon the tremendous popularity of our award-winning Pharmaceutical Waste Collection Program,” said Brooks. Monroe County not only leads by example by assisting other communities across the State with their own pharmaceutical waste collections, but programs such as this highlight the unique opportunities available to our local residents.”

The County, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Wegmans and local police departments, has aided more than 11,000 residents in disposing of more than 30,000 pounds of pharmaceutical waste through the Monroe County Pharmaceutical Waste Collection Program. All medications are destroyed by an incineration process overseen by law enforcement.

No appointments are necessary to participate in the RIT pharmaceutical collection event. Waste from pharmacies, veterinary offices and pharmaceutical businesses will not be accepted. Residents can access a full household hazardous waste (HHW) schedule by calling 753-7600 (option #3) or by viewing the County’s online appointment scheduler at http://www.monroecounty.gov/hhw.
