Dinolfo Selects Mendoza to Serve as Interim Commissioner of Public Health

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced her appointment of Dr. Michael Mendoza to the position of Interim Commissioner of Public Health. Dr. Mendoza will also continue his role as Medical Director at Highland Family Medicine and as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine, Public Health Sciences and Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Tonight, the Monroe County Legislature authorized a contract with University of Rochester Medical Center for Dr. Mendoza’s services.

“With extensive experience and expertise in the medical field and a thorough educational background, Dr. Mendoza is highly qualified and duly prepared to serve Monroe County as Interim Commissioner of Public Health,” said Dinolfo. “As a recognized educator and writer with numerous publications, we welcome Dr. Mendoza to our great team at the Monroe County Public Health Department.”

Dr. Michael Mendoza received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, a Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois, Chicago School of Public Health, and a Master of Science of Business Administration from the University of Rochester, Simon Graduate School of Business. He has served as the Medical Director at Highland Family Medicine since 2009 and before joining the University of Rochester; Dr. Mendoza served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago and saw patients as a National Health Service Corps Scholar.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a great Health Department with so much potential here in Monroe County,” said Mendoza. “Under the strong leadership of County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo we can continue the great programs and services the County has to offer the community. I am grateful for Dr. Cushman’s guidance and for leaving the County with a great team here at Public Health.”

Also joining the administration of the Department of Public Health is Frank Golisano, who has been named the Associate Director of Public Health. Golisano has been with the Monroe County Health Department since 2011, serving as the Health Business Operations Manager and Deputy Registrar of Vital Records. Golisano has worked in the healthcare sector for over twenty years.

"The public's health will be in good hands with the selection of Dr. Michael Mendoza as the next Interim Health Commissioner,” said Interim Commissioner of Public Health Dr. Jeremy Cushman. “Together with Mr. Golisano, with whom I've worked closely with over the past year, and other key staff, the Health Department will stand ready to effectively respond to any significant health issue that may arise.

Dr. Mendoza, with the approval of the of the Legislature tonight, will assume his new position on Monday, April 18, 2016.

“We thank Dr. Cushman for his service to the residents of Monroe County as our Interim Commissioner of Public Health for the past year,” said Dinolfo. “We are looking forward to continuing to work with him as he continues in his role as Monroe County’s EMS Medical Director.”
