Dinolfo Unveils Project Proposal to Transform ROC Airport for the 21st Century

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo was joined by representatives from the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) to announce details regarding the ROC Airport project proposal submission for the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Solicitation.

The State initiative has made available $190 million to support Upstate airport improvements. Eligible airports were asked to complete and submit applications by July 1st detailing an infrastructure plan in order to compete for a maximum project award not to exceed $40 million.

“Our Airport is a gateway for millions of people each year and the transformative nature of this proposal will enhance the experience for all travelers,” said Dinolfo. “The proposal submitted to the State will help fuel our local economy by providing a world-class air travel experience for our residents and travelers. Our comprehensive proposal will allow the Airport to continue as a safe, efficient and affordable transportation hub while promoting economic development, job creation and tourism right here in Monroe County.”

The ROC Airport’s innovative project design proposal will transform the building into a high-tech “smart terminal,” while enhancing safety and security and optimizing opportunities for an improved passenger experience complete with modern amenities.

Submitted with the application are proposed architectural design renderings showcasing improved airport access and gateway signage, a new cell phone lot location prior to reaching the terminal by car, an airport entry canopy covering the arrival/departure roadway, terminal upgrades to the security checkpoint, integrated communication technology for passengers with disabilities and an expanded concessions marketplace complete with new children play zones and lounge seating.

“The Airport industry has changed dramatically since 9/11,” said Michael A. Giardino, Director of Aviation. ”We are hopeful that the Governor will award ROC the maximum project grant of $40 million. Our team is prepared to implement the funds responsibly and rapidly so that our community can begin to reap the benefits today of a terminal designed for the future.”

The ROC project proposal received 75 letters of support from the community including: Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council (FLREDC), Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, VisitRochester, City of Rochester, Congressional, State and Local elected officials, Institutions of Higher Learning, corporate supporters, airline partners and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
