Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge To Close For Season On March 31st

Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge To Close For Season On March 31st

The Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning Friday, March 31st at 9:00 a.m.  The structure will remain closed to traffic for seven months and is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, November 1st, 2017.

The Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge (IBOB) is a bobtail swing bridge located at the north end of Irondequoit Bay, spanning the outlet between Lake Road in the Town of Webster and Culver Road in the Town of Irondequoit. The closure, which involves swinging the bridge into its storage space along the western shore of the outlet, is required to provide for unobstructed boat traffic between Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario.

The current seasonal bridge was designed to span the outlet for vehicular traffic during the winter months and, in conformance with permits granted by the United States Coast Guard, it is to be removed during the boating season. The IBOB is maintained and operated by the Monroe County Department of Transportation (DOT).

Once locked in storage, the bridge will offer area residents an overlook access area and other passive recreation opportunities along the outlet of Irondequoit Bay. The main structure of the bridge spans 132.5 feet across the outlet, with a counter-weighted span of 53 feet.
