Cell Phone/Rechargeable Batteries: NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Law requires manufacturers of certain batteries to provide for the collection and recycling of these batteries statewide in a manufacturer-funded program at no cost to consumers.
Rechargeable batteries include: nickel-cadmium, sealed lead, lithium ion, nickel metal hydride, other dry cell batteries capable of being recharged and battery packs containing any of the aforementioned batteries.
Retailers (Best Buy, Home Depot, Staples, Sprint, Target, Verizon Wireless, BatteriesPlus, etc.) must accept rechargeable batteries for recycling.

General Household Battery Information: Household batteries include typical disposable alkaline batteries and batteries that must be recycled including: rechargeable batteries (found in cell phones, laptops, etc.); button batteries (found in watches, hearing aids, etc.); and, sealed lead (found in large children's toys).
Note: Beginning 12/5/11, The NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act makes it illegal for NYS residents to knowingly dispose of certain rechargeable, lithium ion, button and sealed lead batteries in the regular trash. See www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/72065.html for details.
