2009 State of the County Address

On Wednesday, May 13th, County Executive Maggie Brooks delivered the 2009 State of the County Address at the University of Rochester’s Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Center.
In her sixth annual address since taking office in 2004, Brooks addressed the challenges currently facing our community, our State, and our Nation, but also highlighted the many ways in which Monroe County continues to stand strong in the face of adversity. Citing economic development and job connection programs such as “Monroe Manufactures Jobs,” “Warriors to Work,” and “Monroe JobLink”; government cost reduction programs such as “Project Save” and the Medicaid Demonstration Project; sustainability efforts such as “Refill Not Landfill” and the installation of wind turbines and solar panels at the Great Rochester International Airport; and public safety initiatives such as the new Mobile Communications Unit and upcoming Monroe County Crime Lab, Brooks outlined the great lengths being taken by County government to help achieve an even brighter tomorrow for the taxpayers and families of Monroe County.
2008 State of the County Address

Nearly 180 years ago, Colonel Nathaniel Rochester led the charge to establish the Rochester Athanaeum, an association created to promote the study of arts, sciences and literature. First located in the Reynolds Arcade, this cultural center quickly grew in prominence and earned a reputation for scholastic excellence.
Several years later, the Athenaeum merged with the Mechanics Literary Association and continued its commitment to intellectual pursuits. Legendary figures such as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Dickens, and Rochester’s own Frederick Douglass journeyed to the downtown campus to offer their unique perspective on literature, public policy, and law.
This decorated and respected institution was renamed the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944. Twenty-four years later, due to its rapid growth, RIT relocated to this spacious Henrietta campus.
Today, RIT stands proud as one of the world’s most renowned and distinguished institutions of higher learning...
2007 State of the County Address

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks delivered her third State of the County Address from Paychex's Henrietta Operations Center.
More than thirty-five years ago, the proud son of Sicilian Immigrants began a journey in search of the American dream. A graduate of Alfred and a one-time teller at the old Lincoln First Bank, he had achieved some success publishing a bidders guide for local companies.
However, this visionary did not rest on his laurels. He knew that our region and our nation were entering into a new age…where technology would play an unprecedented role in the way we would do business.
And that is why in 1971, B. Thomas Golisano tapped the emerging market potential for small-to-midsize companies by starting Paychex.
More than thirty-five years later, all of us have witnessed the extraordinary results of Tom Golisano’s vision and hard work.
Paychex is one of our country’s greatest success stories. It is rated by Fortune Magazine as one of the best companies to work for in America, and one of the most admired.
2006 State of the County Address

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks delivered her second State of the County Address Wednesday evening, January 18, 2006, in the chambers of the Monroe County Legislature.
Good evening. Before I begin my remarks, I ask that you join me in observing a moment of silence in honor of the men and women of Monroe County who defend our freedom in the United States military, and for those we have lost, including most recently, Private First Class Jason Hasenauer of Parma.
I would also like to pay tribute to the 24 Monroe County Employees who have taken military
leave during the years following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Some of them are
presently on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, some of them are back home and back to work
at their jobs, and two of them are with us tonight. Please join me in welcoming Sylvester
Thomas and Hector Alvarado. Thank you both for your service and sacrifice. You make all of
us very proud.
Mr. President, Majority Leader Smith, Minority Leader Palumbo, Sheriff O’Flynn, County Clerk
Dinolfo, District Attorney Green, Senator Robach, Assemblyman Reilich, Mayor Duffy,
Chairman Minarik, Chairman Cook, distinguished guests, friends and fellow taxpayers…
There is a saying, "In order to know where you’re going, it’s important to know where you’ve
been."
Tonight, we look back upon our accomplishments from 2005, but more important, we look ahead
to 2006 and beyond.

2005 State of the County Address

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks delivered her 2005 State of the County Address before the County Legislature on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. This was Brooks’ first State of the County Address.
“Mr. President, Majority Leader Smith, Minority Leader Aldersley, Sheriff O’Flynn, County Clerk Dinolfo, Mayor Johnson, Chairman Minarik, Chairman Cook, distinguished guests, friends and fellow taxpayers.
“Tonight, I’m here to report on the State of our County. As you know, this is the first State of the County Address that I will deliver. Tonight is a time for all of us to look back on the year that has come to a close. It’s a time to take inventory of what we have done, together. And, most important, it’s a time for us to look ahead, to chart the course for 2005 and beyond.”
