Stormwater Coalition

Working Together to Reduce Stormwater Pollution

Established in 2000, the Monroe County Stormwater Coalition is comprised of 27 municipal members. By working together, Coalition members are able to comply with the federal stormwater regulations and improve water quality in a cost-effective manner. At this time, the Coalition is funded through membership fees and state and federal grants. However, the Coalition is pursuing a long-term funding strategy.

The Coalition meets on a monthly basis and leadership is provided by a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Executive Committee. The Coalition has two staff persons that are housed at the Monroe County Department of Public Health. The work of the Coalition is advanced by 4 task groups: Construction, Education/Public Participation, Illicit Discharges, and Pollution Prevention.

The Coalition implements a wide range of projects and programs that reduce stormwater pollution including public education, training for municipal employees, and assistance with stormwater system mapping. The Coalition partners with several agencies including the Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Water Education Collaborative at the Rochester Museum & Science Center in order to utilize existing expertise in the community and maximize its efforts.

The Coalition’s work has been honored with an “Empire State Award for the Advancement of Stormwater Management” from New York State and a “Management Innovation Award” from the American Public Works Association.

Coalition staff can be reached at 585 753-5472 or 585 753-5468.

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that the Stormwater Coalition of Monroe County has selected Greg Cunneyworth, a senior at Pittsford Sutherland High School, as the winner of its student logo design contest. The Stormwater Coalition will use the winning logo on its education pieces and training materials.

“The logo design contest was a great way to get students involved in helping us promote the importance of protecting our environment,” said Brooks. “I congratulate Greg on designing an outstanding logo and helping communicate the message that we all have a role to play in conserving our water resources and reducing stormwater pollution.”

The logo design contest was open to all Monroe County students in grades 7 through 12. The Stormwater Coalition was impressed with Greg's creativity and the professional look of his design.

The Stormwater Coalition is awarding a $200 savings bond to Greg in recognition of his efforts. The Coalition is also awarding honorable mention prizes of $100 savings bonds to Amelia Folkins and Christine Bricault, both juniors at Penfield High School.

The Stormwater Coalition of Monroe County is an alliance of 25 towns and villages and the County of Monroe. The Coalition works to protect local water resources such as Lake Ontario, Irondequoit Bay and the Genesee River by reducing stormwater pollution. The Stormwater Coalition works with other organizations in the community to educate and train citizens, real estate developers, and municipal employees on actions they can take to reduce stormwater pollution.

The Stormwater Coalition advises residents to be careful to never dispose of anything down the storm drain. Residents are encouraged to properly dispose of household hazardous waste at Monroe County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, clean up after pets, and to maintain cars to prevent leaks so pollutants do not enter the stormwater system.
