Brooks Announces STOP-DWI Crackdown for Labor Day Holiday

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that the County STOP-DWI Program and Sheriff’s Office is participating in a statewide STOP-DWI crackdown effort called, “Over the Limit. Under Arrest,” for the Labor Day Holiday. The joint patrol is an effort between the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, New York State Police, State Sheriff’s Association, Chiefs of Police Association and the STOP-DWI Association.
“While the County’s STOP-DWI Program continues to significantly reduce the number of deadly drunk driving crashes – arresting impaired drivers before a DWI crash can occur remains the best way to prevent devastation to our community,” said Brooks. “We hope to cut those numbers even further with highly visible and highly publicized events like statewide crackdown patrols.”
“Over the Limit. Under Arrest” runs through September 6th. It aims to increase law enforcement, reduce injuries and fatalities due to drunk driving, and raise awareness. Law enforcement agencies throughout Monroe County are targeting drunk and impaired operators of motor vehicles through saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints.
In addition to the STOP-DWI Crackdown, the Monroe County Office of Probation will conduct bar checks and assist surveillance details to keep convicted drunk drivers off the roads. Probation officers will investigate establishments which have been identified as “problem bars” by the New York State Liquor Authority.
Monroe County STOP-DWI coordinates a variety of prevention education programs for schools and community members. The program’s goals are to heighten awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and to remind the public that DWI is a random act of violence which can be prevented.
