Sports Development: MCSDC

The Monroe County Sports Development Corporation (MCSDC) was first announced in June of 1997. MCSDC, a not-for-profit corporation, actively solicits amateur events, sports clinics, and conventions to increase the economic impact that will ultimately lead to a better quality of life for Monroe County residents.

Working with the Greater Rochester Visitors Association, MCSDC acts as a clearinghouse for sporting activities by assisting sports organizations and promoters in making Monroe County a successful host for sports events. MCSDC also works with local sports clubs to develop sports opportunities for youth within the community.

The sports scene continues to rapidly grow nationally and locally. Through the commitment and vision of the MCSDC Board of Directors, volunteers, and area residents, Monroe County will become a worldwide leader in the sports industry. MCSDC is an active member of the National Association of Sports Commissions.

The Monroe County Sports Development Corporation (MCSDC) is a leadership organization that maximizes the positive impact of sports to improve the economic vitality and quality of life of the community.

The three major goals of the Sports Development Corporation are:

  1. To attract sporting events to the area.
  2. Assist local sports organizers with hosting events.
  3. To develop sports and recreational opportunities for youth.

MCSDC is an active member of the National Association of Sports Commissions and partners with the Greater Rochester Visitors Association to host sporting events in Monroe County.

Come Out and Play!

The Monroe County Sports Development Corporation (MCSDC) invites you to “Come Out and Play!” in Rochester, New York! Greater Rochester is an ideal place to hold a sporting event. Centrally located in Upstate New York, Monroe County is nestled along the southern shore of beautiful Lake Ontario and is bisected by the Genesee River and the historic Erie Canal.

Our game plan is to bring organized sporting events, clinics and conventions to Rochester, New York. The Monroe County Sports Development Corporation has partnered with the Greater Rochester Visitors Association to ensure that all sporting events hosted in Rochester are a complete success from start to finish.

2006 Empire State Games to Be Held In Rochester

Governor George Pataki recently announced that the 2006 Empire State Summer Games will be held in Rochester from July 26–30, 2006.

The Games are expected to bring nearly 6,000 athletes and an expected 20,000 visitors to the area. They were last held in Rochester in 1998.

“This is great news for Rochester and Monroe County and speaks volumes about our community’s excellence in hosting premier sporting events. Our resources and venues—including our nationally recognized colleges and universities—are truly second to none,” said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.“We are pleased to have been chosen as the location for the 2006 Empire State Summer Games and we look forward to the opportunity to showcase our outstanding community to the thousands of athletes and fans who will be visiting and staying in Monroe County.”

While the athletes will be housed in area college and university dormitories, family, friends and spectators are expected to impact area lodging facilities, restaurants, and attractions. Estimates of upward to $8 million in economic impact for the local economy are projected.

“The games will also provide significant benefits to our economy—including our hospitality and tourism industry—bringing millions of dollars into our area,” Brooks added. “The Empire State Games will have a tremendous economic impact in Monroe County and the Greater Rochester region. We thank Governor Pataki for selecting Rochester and Monroe County as the host community for the 2006 Games.”

“This is a perfect example of the strong leadership of the County’s cooperative sports sales efforts including the Monroe County Sports Development Corporation and the Greater Rochester Visitors Association,” said Ed Hall, GRVA President and CEO. “This collaboration has proven to be an efficient and effective way of promoting Greater Rochester as an attractive amateur sporting events venue.”

The Games will primarily be conducted in facilities at area college campuses. The 2006 Empire State Summer Games marks the 29th celebration of the Games, one of the largest amateur state-sponsored athletic programs in the nation.

Monroe County’s Girls’ Sports Festival

The Monroe County Sports Development Corporation hosts the Annual Monroe County Girls’ Sports Festival at the ESL Sports Centre at Monroe Community College. The 2005 festival was held on Saturday, August 6th with nearly 350 girls in attendance. The festival began with 17 year-old Brighton resident Kerrie Smith singing the national anthem.

The festival is a one-day event for all girls between the ages of 8 and 14. Participants are able to try new sports in a non-competitive setting. No experience is necessary.

Girls are able to choose five sports out of the 17 sports that are offered each year.

Brooks Honors Girls Hockey Team

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks hosted a ceremony to recognize the Rochester Edge Girls Hockey League for their generous actions in response to the tragic bus accident involving the Windsor Wildcats Girls Hockey Team last winter.

The accident, which occurred on January 29, 2005, twenty-seven miles south of Rochester, left four fatally wounded and nineteen injured. Members of the Rochester Edge, a division of the Rochester Youth Hockey League, offered their support to Windsor families staying in the Rochester area after the accident.
