Mission Statement

The Jail Bureau of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office currently operates three facilities: a pre-trial detention facility that houses approximately 1,000 inmates in downtown Rochester, a sentenced facility in suburban Brighton, New York, that houses 475 sentenced inmates, and a regional forensic unit at the Rochester Psychiatric Center.

Visiting an Inmate

Each inmate housed at the Monroe County Jail and Monroe Correctional Facility is permitted two one-hour visits each week.

Downtown visits may be scheduled Tuesday through Saturday in person or by calling 585 428-3000 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. untilo 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. All visits are scheduled in advance; there are no walk-in visits available.

All inmates are allowed to request one permanent visit time to be scheduled each week. Permanent visit times are granted based on availability of space. The inmate must make requests for permanent visits in writing to the Visits Staff.

All visitors must arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled visit time. If you are not on time, your visit may be cancelled.

You must have photographic identification to enter the visiting area.

Visiting days are Tuesday through Saturday. There are no visits on Sunday and Monday.

Visit Schedule

Tuesday through Saturday:

  • 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
  • 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
  • 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
  • 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m.
  • 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m.
  • 2:45 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.

Money Window

Money may be deposited into an inmate account Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the money window. No checks or money orders are accepted. Only exact amounts of cash are accepted.

Inmate Property

Property is accepted at the Property Window Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Each inmate is permitted one clothing property transaction. Within the one clothing property transaction an inmate may receive:

  • 1 long-sleeved gray sweat suit
  • 6 short-sleeved white t-shirts
  • 1 set of white or beige thermal underwear
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of flat slippers
  • 2 colored bath towels (no white towels permitted)
  • 2 washcloths
  • 1 pair gym shorts

In addition, one set of trial clothes may be exchanged during the course of the inmate’s trial.

The following items will be routinely accepted:

  • Medication as authorized by the medical staff
  • Religious items authorized by the jail chaplain

The inmate property office will not accept:

  • Clothing with hoods, pockets, zippers, buttons, snaps, drawstrings or metal
  • Items with logos or prints of any kind
  • Medication not authorized by the medical staff
  • Items that are not one solid color
  • Newspapers, magazines and books of any kind

Inmates may release valuables (wallets, keys, watches, etc.) only within the first 10 days of their incarceration. The inmate must complete a written property release form and forward it to the Inmate Property Staff. All items within the sealed property bag must be released. The jail staff will not open sealed property bags.

Jail Programs

The Monroe County Jail and Correctional facilities conduct numerous rehabilitation, educational and treatment programs for locally sentenced inmates and detainees, including:

  • GED and high school education programs
  • Drug and alcohol treatment programs
  • Postsecondary math and English programs
  • Support groups for battered women
  • Women’s issues programming
  • Literacy Volunteers
  • Career counseling
  • Transition programming
  • Work and education and self-help release programs
