Deputy Sheriff Requirements
Once you have successfully passed both the written examination and a physical agility test, you will undergo an intensive background investigation as well as psychological and medical reviews. Because we are committed to providing the highest quality deputies to the public, you will undergo a screening with a thorough background investigation. You must report any convictions on your record. If you have been convicted of a felony, you may not work for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or other violation, you may be barred from employment. You must cooperate truthfully and completely in all aspects of the investigation; falsified or omitted information may cause you to be disqualified.

Your physical fitness will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to perform the duties of a deputy sheriff. Please be aware that an offer of employment is contingent upon the passing of all phases of the process.

Minimum Qualifications for All Positions

- Be a high school graduate or have GED diploma
- Be a United States citizen
- Possess a valid New York State Class “D” driver’s license
- Meet physical and medical standards

Available Positions and Requirements
Deputy Sheriff Road Patrol
This is a position in our Police Bureau.
This is a professional law enforcement position responsible for the impartial enforcement of all federal, state and local ordinances, the preservation of peace, and protection of lives and property. These deputies apprehend lawbreakers and assist in criminal investigations, and they are armed in the performance of their duties. They must be available for shift work, weekends, and holidays. Deputy Sheriffs in the Road Patrol must successfully complete training in accordance with New York State’s Municipal Police Training Council. (The police academy is 24 weeks and an additional twenty weeks of field training).
Deputy Sheriff Road Patrol (Part-Time)
This is a position in our Police Bureau.
These officers perform the same duties as Deputy Sheriffs who are in the Road Patrol full-time; however, their assignments are restricted to County Parks Patrol, Airport, Marine Unit, Mounted Unit, Social Service Offices and the Sheriff’s Tactical Accident Reduction (S.T.A.R.) Unit.
Deputy Sheriff Jailor
This is a position in our Jail Bureau.
These officers are responsible for supervising inmates in one of the Monroe County jail facilities, ensuring that order, discipline, safety and security are maintained. Employees must successfully complete a training course mandated by the New York State Commission of Corrections. (The jail academy is 16 weeks including field training).
Deputy Sheriff Court Security
This is a position in our Court Security Bureau.
Court Security officers are responsible for maintaining order, security, and decorum in the Hall of Justice, Public Safety Building and in the courtrooms during trials. Duties include the protection of judges, juries, courtroom participants and the general public. Candidates must successfully complete a 15-week Court Security Academy.
Deputy Sheriff Civil Bureau
This is a position in our Civil Bureau.
This civil law enforcement position includes responsibilities for serving summonses, complaints, and court orders. Duties include enforcing seizures, civil arrests, evictions, pursuing offenders, and restraint and search of suspects. Candidates must successfully complete a nine-week training academy.
Monroe County Civil Service Commission
The Monroe County Civil Service Commission is composed of five members appointed by the County Executive for a six-year term. The Commission oversees the Civil Service function for all branches of local government in Monroe County, except for those covered under the Rochester Municipal Civil Service Commission, such as the City of Rochester and the Rochester Housing Authority.
As part of its services, the Monroe County Civil Service Commission provides Monroe County government and jurisdictions with the following:
- Determines position titles and develops job descriptions.
- Administers examinations for competitive titles and establishes lists of qualified candidates.
- Interprets Civil Service Law, and Rules covering appointment, promotion, discipline and discharge.

Deputy Sheriff Patrol Part-Time and Deputy Sheriff Seasonal positions range from $9.70 to $12.49 per hour. Those titles work in our Airport, Parks, Marine, and STOP-DWI units.

Deputy Sheriff Trainee Program
The Deputy Sheriff Trainee Program is offered to qualified college students (enrolled as full-time students) who are interested in becoming law enforcement or corrections officers, providing an opportunity for on-the-job experience encompassing all areas of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Trainees earn $5.80-6.80 per hour.
Program Requirements
- Candidates must be students enrolled at a local college, be at least 17 years of age and a resident of Monroe County.
- The trainee applicant will undergo an oral interview arranged by the Program Administrator and must meet physical and entrance standards established by the Sheriff.
- The successful applicant must maintain a curriculum comprising 12 credit hours of instruction with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and agree to provide a copy of each semester’s grades to this department. A GPA falling below 2.0 will cause the trainee to be placed on a probationary status for one semester.
- Deputy Sheriff Trainees are classified as part-time, hourly employees and as such receive limited benefits. Uniforms and a cleaning service will be provided.
College Student Intern Program
The intern program provides the opportunity for college students to experience the inner workings of one of the largest Sheriff Offices in New York State. An intern may be assigned to a wide variety of positions, keeping in mind the student’s career goals and on-going internal projects. The Sheriff’s Office typically places interns in the following areas: Road Patrol, Civil Bureau, Court Bureau, Jail Bureau, Staff Services, Marine Patrol, Medical Examiner’s Office, and the District Attorney’s Office. The program operates year round but the openings are limited. Candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting a resume and a cover letter indicating the candidate’s hours of availability, areas of interest and hours required. There is no pay associated with the internships but the experiences and working knowledge gained are invaluable.

Sheriff Explorer Post
The Boy Scouts of America makes Exploring available to our nation’s youth by chartering community organizations to operate Explorer Posts.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Explorer Post #604 (east side of Monroe County) and Post #629 (west side of Monroe County) were established with the support of the Boy Scouts of America to offer young men and women an insight into the field of law enforcement as a possible career choice. Explorer Post members provide helpful services to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the community.

Explorers receive specialized training from the Regional Criminal Justice Training Center and the Monroe County Law Enforcement Training Academy. They also participate in the ride-along program during which they are able to experience how patrol officers handle various situations.
Posts 604 and 629 are chartered organizations and we agree to use the Explorer program in accordance with their own policies as well as those of the Boy Scouts of America.
Explorers are supervised by one adult at all Post functions. Parents, advisors and Post leaders must work together to solve discipline problems. All Exploring activities are open to parental visitation.
Membership
To be eligible for membership in the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post, a candidate must:
- Be between 14-20 years old and in high school
- Pay an $11.00 (includes insurance) Boy Scouts of America registration fee
- Successfully complete a six-month probationary period
- Maintain a “C” average in academics
The applicant does not need to be a current or former Boy Scout or Girl Scout.
