Sheriff's Office Collecting Pharmaceutical Waste at B-Zone Substation on Tuesdays

Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn announced that the Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the County Department of Environmental Services (DES) to expand Monroe County’s pharmaceutical waste collection program. Residents can drop off their unused, unwanted and/or expired medications to the Sheriff’s B-Zone Substation at 245 Summit Point Drive on Tuesdays only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This drop-off provides residents with a location to safely and securely dispose of any medicines they are currently not using,” said Sheriff O’Flynn. “This also shows how the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is exploring new ways to ensure the safety of our citizens by keeping potentially harmful pharmaceuticals out of our landfills and water supply.”

Sheriff’s Deputies oversee the drop-off which is free and open to the public. Also, no appointment is needed. Residents are asked to black out any personal information (not the medication name or dosage) on their prescription and over-the-counter medication containers. All medicines will be destroyed by an incineration process which is administered by law enforcement. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and DES hope to expand the pharmaceutical drop-off to the Sheriff’s A-Zone Substation in Penfield and the C-Zone Substation in Chili in the future.
The Monroe County Water Authority and Center for Environmental Information also team up with the County for pharmaceutical waste collections. Waste from pharmacies, businesses and veterinary offices will not be accepted.
