Dinolfo Appoints Mendoza To Serve As Full-Time Public Health Commissioner

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced her appointment of Dr. Michael Mendoza to the position of Public Health Commissioner. Dr. Mendoza has been selected after serving as Interim Commissioner of Public Health since April 2016.

“As Interim Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Mendoza demonstrated his extensive expertise in the medical field and quickly became an invaluable member of my administration,” said Dinolfo. “Dr. Mendoza is highly qualified and I am confident in his ability to lead our great team in the Health Department as our full-time Commissioner.”

Dr. Michael Mendoza received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine; his Master of Public Health degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago School of Public Health; and his Master of Science of Business Administration degree from the University of Rochester, Simon Graduate School of Business. He has served as the Medical Director at Highland Family Medicine since 2009. Before joining the University of Rochester, Dr. Mendoza served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago and saw patients as a National Health Service Corps Scholar.

“After having the honor to serve as Interim Commissioner of Public Health, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue leading a great Health Department with a top-rated team here in Monroe County,” said Mendoza. “Under the strong leadership of County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo, we can provide and expand the excellent programs and services that the County has to offer our community.”

At the July meeting of the Monroe County Legislature, County Executive Dinolfo will introduce a local law amending the County Charter authorizing the Commissioner of Public Health to maintain clinical hours in order remain current with professional certifications. In August, there will be a public hearing for the local law with final approval coming from the County Legislature in September. Dr. Mendoza will serve as Interim Commissioner through the end of 2016.  Dr. Mendoza’s appointment will then come before Monroe County Legislature for confirmation as the full-time Public Health Commissioner effective January 1, 2017.
