Dinolfo Issues Extended Swimming Hours At Ontario Beach Park And Safety Tips During Heat Wave

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced that public swimming hours at Ontario Beach Park will be extended for today, Thursday, July 18th through Saturday, July 20th due to the heat and humidity of the forecasted high temperatures.

“With the hot and humid weather approaching, we are extending hours for public swimming at our Ontario Beach Park to accommodate residents looking to escape the heat,” said Dinolfo. “As temperatures and humidity begin to rise, I encourage everyone to take active steps to prevent unnecessary heat-related illness by staying cool, hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activity.”

Beginning today, July 18th, and running through Saturday, July 20th lifeguards will remain on duty and public swimming will be allowed to continue at Ontario Beach Park for one extra hour, until 8:00 p.m. as long as conditions, including adequate daylight and water quality, are favorable. Normal hours for public swimming are from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., daily through Labor Day. Swimming is only allowed at Ontario Beach Park when lifeguards are on duty.

Beach and swimming equipment such as life jackets, kickboards, floats, water toys, sand toys and footballs are all made available to beach-goers at no cost. Families can borrow these items from the lifeguard staff. In addition, free swimming lessons are offered every Wednesday, from 10:00 - 10:45 am (5 years old and up).

The Monroe County Department of Public Health advises that residents can minimize the risks from the heat by following simple steps such as:

· Slow Down. Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. Children, seniors and anyone with specific health concerns should stay in the coolest location available to them, not necessarily indoors.
· Drink plenty of water or other non-alcohol or decaffeinated fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease, are on fluid restricted diets or have a problem with fluid consumption should consult a physician before increasing their consumption of fluids.

· During excess heat periods, spend more time in air-conditioned places. Air conditioning in homes and other buildings markedly reduces danger from the heat. If you cannot afford an air conditioner, go to a library, store or other location with air conditioning for part of the day.

· Don't get too much sun. Sunburn reduces your body's ability to dissipate heat.

· Check on elderly neighbors or others who may be home bound.
