Dinolfo Teams Up with UNICON to Present National Apprenticeship Week

County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced that Monroe County will be teaming up with UNiCON Rochester to present National Apprenticeship Week from Monday, November 12th, through Friday, November 16th. National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide workforce development initiative that promotes the construction trades as a career choice for local job-seekers.

“As part of our efforts to grow more jobs, Monroe County is committed to connecting residents with the tools they need to be successful in rewarding industries like the skilled trades,” said Dinolfo. “There are good-paying careers in the trades available right here, right now that are just waiting for the right people with the right skills. During National Apprenticeship Week, Monroe County is thrilled to work with Joe Leone and UNiCON to provide opportunities for job-seekers to get hands-on experience in these fields.”

There is a continued shortage of workers with the skills needed to work in industries like construction, sheet metalworking, plumbing, pipefitting, electrical work, and many more. Rewarding careers are currently available in these fields.

The 15 local building and construction trades unions all provide apprenticeships, which are earn-while-you-learn programs. Apprentices receive both classroom and on-the-job experience, under the supervision of experienced tradesmen in the field.

“We are excited to bring National Apprenticeship Week to Rochester,” said Joe Leone, Executive Director of UNiCON Rochester. “As a region we have continued to excel in the skilled trades area through workforce development programs at our local colleges and universities, increased focus with programs like Monroe County’s LadderzUp, and expansions of our local building trades apprenticeship programs and facilities. With over 650 Apprentices currently enrolled in our local union apprenticeship programs, we continue to provide a debt free, earn-while-you-learn pathway to a long and successful career in construction.”

National Apprenticeship Week will be kicked off on Monday, November 12th at 10:00 a.m. at the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 13, located at 1850 Mt. Read Blvd, Rochester, NY 14615. The week’s events include the proclamation ceremony, apprenticeship program open house, and an educator’s career fair.

“We recognize the importance of coming together as a community to help develop the skills that are in demand in our region and are grateful to all our community leaders for their continued support,” continued Leone. “It is our hope to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week in Rochester by acknowledging the hard work and significant investment in training made by our unionized construction workforce, offering a career path that fills the gap between the demand for skilled workers and unemployment and poverty in our greater Rochester Finger Lakes region.”
