History of the County Clerk's Office

A public office prescribed for by the New York State Constitution, County Clerks can historically trace their roots back all the way to 13th century England, King John and the Magna Carta. In Monroe County, our first County Clerk was none other than Nathaniel Rochester.

Today, the Monroe County Clerk is one of four county-wide elected officials, joining the County Executive, Sheriff, and District Attorney, and acts as an agent for both the state and federal governments, as well. The duties and responsibilities of the County Clerk are broad, and this office interacts with nearly everyone in our community on a routine basis.

Ms. Jamie Romeo is the current Monroe County Clerk. She is the 39th person to hold this office, appointed to fill out the remainder of a term in February 2020.
