Dinolfo Hosts American Flag Retirement Ceremony

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo hosted an American Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Ecopark and announced a permanent, sustainable retirement option for American Flags that are at the end of their lifespan. The Flag Retirement Ceremony, held on Flag Day, featured several local veterans groups and community organizations.

“The American Flag flies proudly at homes and buildings throughout our community,” said Dinolfo. “It is a symbol of the values and freedoms that define our great nation, and so it is with the utmost honor that we establish respectful retirement options for the Flag. Thanks to our new partnership with Covanta, we are pleased to be able to accept Flags at the Ecopark all year-around.”

American Flags were already accepted at the Ecopark, but there were a decreasing amount of outlets to retire the flags once they were accepted. Even now, local American Legion Posts, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFWs), and other veterans groups have begun bringing their flags to the Ecopark for retirement.

“Covanta is honored to assist local veteran groups to reverently retire American flags,” said Kathleen Carroll, Business Manager at Covanta. “We hold our veterans to the highest regard for their service to our country and are committed to helping these American heroes any way we can. Veterans are very important to us at Covanta. In fact, they account for 15 percent of our U.S. workforce.”

Due to a new partnership with Covanta’s Niagara Falls Facility, an Energy-from-Waste facility that generates low-cost steam for neighboring industrial customers and electricity for the Western New York region, the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services (DES) will accept flags at the Ecopark all year-around and will transport them to Covanta for retirement. The entire process will be conducted respectfully, in full accordance with the United States Flag Code.

The Ecopark is located at 10 Avion Drive and is open Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For a full list of accepted items, associated fees and necessary appointments, visit www.ecoparkmcny.com.
