Dinolfo: This Holiday Season, Recycle Styrofoam at the Ecopark

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced the County has identified a
sustainable solution for Styrofoam™ recycling: the purchase and use of a Densifier, which
makes recycling the common block packaging material more economical and
environmentally-friendly.

“For many years Styrofoam posed a recycling challenge for our Environmental Services team,
until we recently secured a new technology that will now allow us to accept and dispose of
Styrofoam more efficiently and effectively,” said Dinolfo. “This holiday season, we encourage
residents to bring their clean, white, block Styrofoam directly to the Ecopark rather than placing
it in the garbage or a curbside recycling bin. By recycling right, we can continue to keep our
community beautiful, enhancing our ability to attract jobs and investment to Monroe County.”

Expanded Polystyrene, often referred to by the trademarked product name of Styrofoam™, is
a commonly-used material for packaging and shipping. The material is not accepted in
curbside bins, nor should it be sent to the landfill. Since opening, the Ecopark has accepted
this material; however, there have been consistent challenges finding an economical outlet
because the major component (98%) of polystyrene is air. The Densifier enables the County
to condense expanded polystyrene to a size and density which is more financially viable to
transport, making it attractive to potential buyers.

Only white, clean, block expanded polystyrene used for packaging is accepted at the
Ecopark. Cups, meat trays, egg cartons, takeout containers, and packing peanuts are
not accepted.

The Densifier required a capital investment of $56,000 from Monroe County, for which the
County is currently pursuing grant funding. At projected revenue rates, the County will
realize a return on investment in approximately 15 years.

The Ecopark is located at 10 Avion Drive and is open Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30
p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For a full list of accepted items, associated
fees and necessary appointments, visit www.ecoparkmcny.com.
