Polling Site Designations

Polling sites within Monroe County are designated by the Board of Elections. Every effort is made to accommodate voters; 94% of all polling sites are accessible for people with physical disabilities.

Voter Verification Letters

The Board of Elections distributes letters every August, informing you of your polling site. The letters will indicate your election district number which you may need to know on election day.

What to Expect at the Polling Site

When you enter the polling site, you will see tables and voting machines for one or more election districts(ED). At the table for your Election District you will be asked to sign next to a copy of your original signature on an alphabetical digitized poll-list.

Operating a Voting Machine

When you enter the voting booth, pull the large red handle to activate the machine. Make your selections by moving the lever next to the name of each candidate you wish to vote for until an ’X’ appears.

You may change your mind and move the levers up and down as often as necessary. However, once your choices are made, leave them down and pull the large red handle to register and count your vote. If need be, an inspector will show you on the sample ballot displayed in your polling place, how to cast a write-in vote.

Assistance in the Voting Booth

If you are a person in need of assistance or cannot read the ballot, federal law allows you to have a friend or relative assist you in the voting booth. Election employees at the polling place are also ready to help you.

Polling Sites Accessible for People with Disabilities

Most polling places are now accessible for people with physical disabilities. However, due to the limited number of voting machines accessible for people with physical disabilities, we recommend that if you require such a machine, you call the Board of Elections ahead of time and request one to be placed at your polling site.

If your polling place itself is not accessible for people with physical disabilities, you may ask to have your site changed to an accessible site nearby by calling 585 753-1501. If you need help in the voting machine or reading the ballot, federal law allows you to have a friend, relative or an available election inspector assist you. The Board also has a TTY number for hearing impaired voters 585 753-1544.
