Civil Service Exams

Information About Civil Service Exams

The Civil Service examinations listed are either open to the public (OC) or limited, if indicated, to a promotional field of employees in Monroe County government or to employees in one or more of the Monroe County civil service jurisdictions (P). If you are interested in taking an examination, click on the exam title and you will find the examination announcement which provides you with information specific to that examination. An application fee is usually required.

Examination announcements are posted to this website approximately two months before the examination is given with a specific closing date for filing the application for examination. Please check the examination listings periodically.

Examinations are offered approximately every two to three weeks, except during the months of July and August, therefore you should check the listing periodically. If you would like to be advised of upcoming exams in a particular recruitment category, please visit the e-Notifier. Follow the instructions and you will be notified when an examination is offered for a title in the category or categories you select.

This is an entry level clerical work involving responsibility for the performance of routine clerical tasks. Independent judgment is restricted to the application of standard procedures to specific cases. The employee is required to be fluent in Spanish and English. Typing is an integral part of this position. Employees receive detailed oral and/or written instructions for new, more involved or difficult assignments. The work is reviewed by immediate supervisory observation, by cross checking, or by another step in the clerical process. Direct supervision is received from a higher level clerical employee or an administrator who is available to assist with difficult or policy problems.

Data Entry Operator, DEO-0607-085/19/2008 5:00pm6/7/2008 8:30am

This is a data entry position involving the operation of a data transcription machine to enter and verify data utilizing a variety of formats and source documents. Data is transcribed either directly into a computer or to punch cards, or magnetic tapes or discs using alpha numeric equipment and requires a high degree of speed and accuracy. Duties involve the use of limited independent judgment when interacting with the central computer in order to correct errors, etc. Incumbents may also perform limited clerical duties in support of data entry operations, however, the majority of the workday is spent keyboarding data. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a senior level staff person following well defined and structured procedures.

Deputy Registrar of Vital Statistics, OC-608465/29/2008 5:00pm6/21/2008 8:30am

This is a supervisory position in the Monroe County Public Health Department responsible for maintaining county wide records of births and deaths, and for providing data to agencies, or groups in the County as mandated by state law. The work is performed under the general supervision of a senior level administrator. General supervision is exercised over a clerical staff.
