Brooks Unveils Restored Historic Midtown Clock At Airport

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks unveiled Midtown Plaza’s historic Clock of the Nations at the Greater Rochester International Airport.  The clock has been fully restored to its original grandeur by the Monroe County Airport Authority and will be temporarily on exhibit at the Airport in the center of the food court.

“There is no question that the Clock of the Nations is a true community treasure and a significant part of Rochester’s history,” said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. “I am thrilled that we have been able to restore the clock and ensure that it will stay in our community for years to come.  Even more importantly, I am proud that the clock will eventually be donated to the Golisano Children’s Hospital, where it will be enjoyed by kids, their families, and visitors.”

The Clock of the Nations, created by sculptor Dale Clark, had been displayed at Midtown Plaza since its opening in 1962.  Due to the impending demolition and re-development of the Midtown property, Midtown Rochester Properties had been active in seeking an appropriate relocation site for the clock. The Monroe County Airport Authority acquired the clock in April of this year and decided to temporarily exhibit it at the Greater Rochester International Airport. In 2012, when renovations are complete at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, Monroe County and the Monroe County Airport Authority will donate the clock to the hospital to be permanently displayed there.

“As Chairman of the Board, I am happy the Monroe County Airport Authority has taken an active role in relocating and restoring Rochester’s great Clock of the Nations,” said James G. Vazzana, Chairman of Monroe County Airport Authority Board.  “The Greater Rochester International Airport will make a great home for the clock over the next couple of years before it reaches its final destination at the Golisano Children’s Hospital.”
