In an effort to promote reading to students throughout the area, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and several County Legislators announced the conclusion of the Monroe County Summer Reading Program with the 2009 Knowledge Bowl. Legislators Wayne Zyra, Harry Bronson, Mary Valerio and Anthony Daniele hosted the quiz-style competition at the County Office Building’s Legislative Chambers. Dozens of students who excelled in the inaugural Summer Reading Program took part in the Knowledge Bowl.

“I believe a strong education is the key to success for our children, and this program brings them one step closer to achieving their dreams,” said Brooks. “The Monroe County Summer Reading Program proved to be a fun and exciting way to get students to read more during the summer months; and the Knowledge Bowl gave these kids a chance to showcase their talents in a friendly competition.”

“These kids’ commitment to reading throughout the summer months is proof of their dedication to learning year-round,” said Monroe County Legislature Majority Leader Dan Quatro. “I am happy knowing that students, from all across Monroe County, were participating in this event, demonstrating their dedication and knowledge throughout today’s competition.”

"The value of encouraging children to read cannot be understated," said Monroe County Legislature Minority Leader Harry Bronson. "That's why I am proud to join with my partners in County Government to promote this worthy initiative and ensure the children of our community have access to the tools they need to learn and grow."

Monroe County unveiled the Summer Reading Program in June. It was created to encourage more middle school and elementary school age kids to read throughout the summer months and sign up for a library card. More than 10,000 students from more than 30 library branches across Monroe County signed up for the program. Nearly 1,000 of the students who participated in the Summer Reading Program achieved “Top Reader” status.

Each participant in the “Knowledge Bowl” received a prize package which includes passes to the Seneca Park Zoo, Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester Museum and Science Center and Eastman House and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Greater Rochester International Airport. The individual winner of the “Knowledge Bowl” received a private rock-climbing party at Rock Ventures.
