Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge To Open To Traffic On November 1st

The Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge (IBOB) will open to vehicular traffic on Tuesday, November 1st, 2016, at approximately 9:30 a.m.  The structure will remain in place through 9:00 a.m. Friday, March 31st, 2017.

The IBOB is located on the north end of Irondequoit Bay, connecting Culver Road in the town of Irondequoit to Lake Road in the town of Webster.  The seasonal swing bridge is designed to span the outlet for vehicular traffic during the winter months.  The Monroe County Department of Transportation (DOT) maintains and operates the IBOB.  The bridge-use schedule is set in accordance with permits issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Monroe County DOT plans to begin placement of the IBOB on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at approximately 7 a.m.  The process of swinging the bridge into place takes nearly 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions.  However, there is a two-hour preparation work period up to and after the actual swinging of the bridge. First, the bearings will have to be lifted up and removed before it can swing freely. Then the bridge will be set back on its bearings and secured in place, before it can be safely used by cars.
