Dinolfo Confirms Meetings with Members of Congress, FEMA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo will meet with members of New York’s Congressional delegation in Washington D.C. including Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27), Congressman John Katko (NY-24) and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22). She will be joined by Lake Ontario shoreline municipal leaders for a meeting with representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In this meeting, Dinolfo will pursue federal funding and action to reimburse residents and businesses impacted by the high water levels in Lake Ontario. She will also advocate for closer monitoring and active management of lake levels to prevent historic high waters in the future and for the creation of physical barriers to mitigate the effects of high water and wave action.

“Everyone has acknowledged that there is damage along the shores of Lake Ontario and that Plan 2014 anticipates an increase in the amount of damage over previous plans,” said County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo. “At tomorrow’s meeting with our federal representatives, I intend to seek from them solutions for Monroe County’s shoreline residents and businesses and I will urge those representatives to put pressure on the United States’ appointees on the International Joint Commission to act in the interests of residents and businesses along the southern shore of Lake Ontario.”

According to the June 2017 U.S. Army Corp of Engineers’ monthly bulletin of lake levels for the Great Lakes, the lake levels will continue at above average levels until the end of the year. We continue to experience flooding in shoreline communities each time even mild winds come out of the north. This flooding causes additional damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. These are not isolated events and must be addressed.
