Description of Duties

This position is located in the Department of Public Safety and the Monroe County Public Defender's Office and is responsible for conducting interviews and assessments of the pre-trial population to identify and determine eligibility for ATI services such as drug and alcohol counseling, referral services, eligibility for release and other services.  The employee works with the Public Defender's Office, Pre-Trial Release Services, private counsel, Office of Probation and Jail staff to obtain and provide information and develop and recommend an ATI service package.  The employee further monitors clients and services to assure appropriate follow-through of the ATI option.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, the ATI Supervisor or other higher level staff member.  This position is not responsible for staff supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a social science* field, Social Work, Human Services, Counseling, Education, or Public Administration, PLUS one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** professional experience working with special populations** in providing human services, assessment services or case management services, counseling, investigating, or interviewing; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above, plus three (3) years experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
  3. Five (5) years experience as defined in (A) above; OR,
  4. Any equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.

*Social science fields includes areas of study concerned with humans living in relation to other humans in a social environment including the following areas:  Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.  Under this definition majors such as Social Psychology and in such areas as “Afro-American studies,” “Judaic studies,” “women’s studies,” “Asian studies,” and “African studies” would be accepted.

**Special populations are defined as individuals with recurring problems with the criminal justice system, and/or those in need of community services such as basic assistance, vocational assistance, housing, education, employment, mental retardation and/or developmentally disabled services, and drug and alcohol counseling.

Special Requirements:

If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
