Description of Duties

This is an important senior technical position in the technical support section of data processing involving the maintenance of computer software programs and development of additional control programs as required.  Employees work with operations, programmers, analysts, and users in solving problems of a technical nature.  The senior systems programmer maintains installation sample system test set and tests new software using the system test set, before putting new or modified software into production.  The work is performed under the general supervision of Associate Systems Programmer.  Supervision is exercised over Systems Programmers.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:

EITHER:

  1. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus four (4) years paid full time or its part time equivalent* experience in computer operators activities two (2) years of which shall have been in programming, or, in operating systems software development; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college with an Associate's degree in Computer Science or related field, plus two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent* experience in programming or in operating systems software development; OR,
  3. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of paid full time or its part time equivalent* experience in computer operations activities, two (2) years of which shall have been in programming or in operating systems software development, OR;
  4. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.
