Monroe County established a groundbreaking Nature-Based Therapy (NBT) program for Veterans in 2021 in response to the loss of face-to-face opportunities for Veterans during the COVID pandemic. The program has evolved and expanded to now offer multiple options for Nature-Based Therapy groups, including Ecotherapy (nature walks, trail-building, etc.), experiences with horses, therapeutic horticulture (on the farm), wild mustang gentling, and nature photography.
All these group experiences are facilitated by Dr. Collins, our Nature-Based Therapy psychologist, and the expert staff from EquiCenter. We offer programs most days of the week, including evenings and some weekends (check current schedule for details.)
In addition, the NBT program offers short-term individual therapy with Dr. Collins. Possible treatment goals include PTSD, sleep, nightmares, relationships, or moral injury. Dr. Collins’ office is at the EquiCenter, giving Veterans flexibility in their treatment environment. Veterans can choose to hold their therapy sessions on the 200-acre EquiCenter grounds, including peaceful wooded trails, outside horse pastures, or at the Koi pond.
Day/Evening appointments available.
NBT program is free for Veterans and open to all Veterans regardless of county of residence. Our facilities are handicapped accessible. NBT program operates year-round, we have programs for every season. We have 44 weeks of programming each year.
