2020 Events

INTERGENERATIONAL FALL CLEAN UP

This event was held on Saturday, November 14, 2020 with a kickoff breakfast at Monroe Community Hospital. The volunteers will go to the homes of older adult residents throughout Monroe County and rake their lawns and bag leaves to prepare for winter. This event creates positive youth development and allows our community's young adults to pay it forward and help an older adult in need.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

This event was held on Thursday, March 5th from 10am - 2pm at Radio Social, Rochester's Social Club. Located in the historic Stromberg-Carlson Building at 20 Carlson Road, 224 congregate meal participants and community's youth came together for a day of friendship, mentorship, and positive youth development. Our seniors had the opportunity to bowl, play skiball, giant jenga, billiards, corn hole and other games with our community's youth. A boxed lunch was provided.

COATS FOR SENIORS

Monroe County collaborates with area business and community partners: Medical Motors, Greater Rochester Area Partnership for the Elderly, Dry Clean Express and Colony Dry Cleaners annually for the “Coats for Seniors” program. The initiative, sponsored by the Monroe County Office for the Aging and Medical Motors, collects and distributes donated winter coats to seniors in need throughout Monroe County. The program runs from September through December.

Donation boxes for the collection of new and gently used clean adult sized coats will be available at the locations listed below: 

• Atrium of the Monroe County Office Building, located downtown at 39 West Main Street;
• City Place, located at 50 West Main Street;
• Monroe Community Hospital, First Floor Faith Building, located at 435 E. Henrietta Road
• Monroe County Department of Human Services: located at 111 Westfall Road and 691 St. Paul Street
• Monroe County DMV locations: Greece Ridge Mall at 152 Greece Ridge Center Drive; 2199 E Henrietta Rd; and 545 Titus Avenue;
• Colony Dry Cleaners, located at 695 Howard Road, Gates
• Dry Clean Express locations: 3159 S Winton Rd, Henrietta, 1158 Fairport Rd, 557 Whitney Rd, Fairport, and 7374 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, Fairport;
• The following Senior Center Locations will collect coats from 10am - 2:00pm, Monday - Friday (unless noted):
  • Charles Settlement House, located at 71 Parkway, Rochester
  • Chili Senior Center, located at 3235 Chili Avenue, Rochester
  • Greece Senior and Community Center, located at 3 Vince Tofany Way, Rochester
  • Henrietta Senior Center, located at Pittsford Senior Center, located at 515 Calkins Road, Rochester
  • Hilton-Parma Senior Center, located at 59 Henry Street, Hilton
  • Ibero Community Action Leagues's Centro de Oro, located at 817 East Main Street, Rochester
  • Ogden Senior Center, located at 200 South Union Street, Spencerport
  • Pittsford Senior Center, located at 35 Lincoln Avenue, Pittsford
  • Wheatland Senior Center, located at 22 Main Street, Scottsville (M, W, Th only)

Monroe County typically collects and redistributes 600-700 coats per year. For 2019, we need you help to reach a goal of 1000 coats!

In addition, if you are an older adult in need of a new or gently used coat, please contact our office at 753-6280 to be placed on a wait list. We will call when a coat with your size has been collected. 

HOLIDAY BALL

This event was held on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the DoubleTree Hotel on the corner of Jefferson Road and E. Henrietta Road in Henrietta, NY.

270 Older Adults and 57 Youth had a great night of dancing and socializing with each other. 

INTERGENERATIONAL FALL CLEAN UP

This event was held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 with a kickoff breakfast at Monroe Community Hospital.

Approximately 200 volunteers came out to rake the yards of Monroe County's Older Adults. 88 Yards were raked. 

   

ANNUAL PUBLIC HEARING & ELDER LAW FAIR

This event was held on Wednesday, October 16th from 7:45am - 12:30pm at Temple B'rith Kodesh, located at 2131 Elmwood Avenue. There were 106 attendees, 9 public speakers and 26 vendors from various long term care services and support agencies onsite.

The Annual Public Hearing portion of this event was held as a requirement under New York Code, Rules and Regulations: 9 NYCRR 6653.2 to educate individuals in the community about the Office for the Aging's plan for a coordinated system of community based long-term care services and supports. This was also an opportunity for individuals to provide feedback regarding the plan prior to submittal for state approvals. MCOFA combined the Public Hearing with the Elder Law Fair, a partnership with the Monroe County Bar Association, Legal Assistance Center of Western NY, Lifespan, and the Empire Justice Center. The Elder Law Fair offered older adults and their informal family caregivers the opportunity to learn about, and obtain assistance, in understanding legal issues that may impact them.

SENIOR JOB FAIR(S)

The Monroe County Office for the Aging, in partnership with Monroe County's Workforce Development Manager, and a few of our area partners to host four job fairs around Monroe County in 2019. Employers will be on-site with various part-time and full-time job opportunities tailored to meet the changing needs of older adult workers, including positions for people with limitations.  

Events will take place from 11:00am - 1:00pm on the dates and at the locations below. For more information please call 753-6280. 

• Town of Chili Senior Center: 3235 Chili Ave, Rochester, NY 14624 - This event was held on Wednesday, June 19th - 4 area employers participated with 30 individuals attending to check out and apply for available positions.
• Town of Henrietta Senior Center: 515 Calkins Road, Henrietta, NY 14623 - Wednesday, July 24th - 6 area employers participated with 33 individuals attending to check out and apply for available positions.
• Town of Greece Community & Senior Center: 1 Vince Tofany Blvd., Rochester, NY 14612 - Wednesday, September 4th - 4 area employers participated with 19 individuals attending to check out and apply for available positions.
• Multi-Aging Resource Center at the Eastside Penfield YMCA: 1835 Fairport Nine Mile Point Rd, Penfield, NY 14526 - Wednesday, October 2nd - 4 area employers participated with 9 individuals attending to check out and apply for available positions.

NEW for 2019: SENIOR DAY AT THE ZOO: This event was held on Friday, September 20th from 10:00am - 2:00pm at the Seneca Park Zoo. Over 860 Seniors attended on this beautiful sunny and warm fall Friday with 15 vendors. This event showcased Seneca Park Zoo's newest family members and exhibits with education provided by talented zoo staff and  volunteers. Attendees who pre-ordered a lunch were provided a nutritional lunch while listening to music from local band, JAVA under the pavilion. Thank you to our  sponsor from the Village at Unity for sponsoring the day's musical entertainment and vendors in attendance.

FALLS PREVENTION DAY WITH OUR PARTNERS AT LIFESPAN OF GREATER ROCHESTER, INC.

This event was held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older adults. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence. They can generate enormous economic and personal costs. In honor of National Falls Prevention Month, this open house event is held annually in September. In partnership with the Monroe County Office for the Aging, Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc. and other area partners hosted demonstrations, balance assessments, and education from area professionals about falls - what can cause them, how to avoid them, and how to minimize/prevent injury when a fall happens. 

39 Community Guests were in attendance with 46 students and 3 faculty members from the University of Rochester School of Nursing, St. John Fisher School of Pharmacology and Brockport Social Work. Providers onsite included: Monroe County Office for the Aging's Registered Dietitian, Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Brighton Emergency Medical Services, Halprin Medical, Episcopal SeniorLife, Finger Lakes Caregiver Institute, ten Matter of Balance and Tai Chi instructors from Lifespan, Workplace Vitality, Inc., Home Safe Home, Doyle Security and Genesee Valley Physical Therapy.

SALUTE TO SENIORS

This event was held on Friday, August 2, 2019 at Ontario Beach Park with approximately 900 attendees and 35 vendors. We'd like to thank Peerplace for generously sponsoring the Gates Swinger's Big Band, our vendors, volunteers, bands and most of all, our guests!

SPRING FLING

This event was held on Friday, May 17th from 10:00am - 2:00pm at the Memorial Art Gallery on University Avenue. We 220 individuals in attendance, maximum capacity for the available space.

• County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo honored all of Monroe County's Older Adults in recognition of Older American's Month and Nominees for Senior of the Year:
  • Susan VanStrydonck - Penfield
  • Paul Morehouse - Webster (unable to attend)
  • Lynn Smith - Henrietta
  • Luba Balycz - Ogden
• Assemblyman Mark Johns was in attendance to honor the nominees from his district: Susan VanStrydonck (Penfield) and Paul Morehouse (Webster)
• Senator Ortt was unavailable to attend but sent a proclamation honoring nominee Luba Balycz from Ogden.
• Assemblyman Harry Bronson was also unable to attend but sent acknowledgements and congratulations to all honorees as his role of Aging Chair for the NYS Assembly and recognition for Lynn Smith from his district in Henrietta.

Past 2018 Events

COATS FOR SENIORS

This event was kicked off with a press conference at the County Office Building on December 5, 2018 with County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and our committed sponsors. The Coats for Seniors Campaign is an annual appeal to our community to look into their heart and their closets, and donate new and gently used coats to assist our community's older adults in need. Coats were collected from December 5, 2018 - January 11, 2019 and then picked up from area drop locations. On January 22, 2019, 700 coats were sorted and re-distributed to our community's seniors and others in need. We thank our generous sponsors and the community for their contribution to keeping our community's older adults safer and warmer this winter season. Sponsor's included: Medical Motor Services of Rochester and Monroe County, Inc., The Greater Rochester Area Partnership for the Elderly (GRAPE), Colony Dry Cleaners, Dry Clean Express and several Monroe County Departments. 

SALUTE TO SENIORS

On Friday, August 17, 2018 approximately 700 older adults from across Monroe County joined us at Ontario Beach Park to celebrate summer with a picnic lunch, entertainment, vendors, and more. 

PUBLIC HEARING & ELDER LAW FAIR

On Saturday, October 13, 2018, 83 participants came to Monroe Community Hospital, located at 435 E. Henrietta Road, to hear about Monroe County's plans to deliver person-centered community based long-term care services and supports with our contracted providers in 2019-20. Under the Older Americans Act, public review and comment is required prior to MCOFA submitting an annually updated plan of programs and services for state approval. In addition, attorneys and vendors from across Monroe County came to provide education and help older adults and caregivers understand their rights. Topics included Medicaid, Powers of Attorney, Guardian Rep-Payees, Social Security Issues, Estate Planning and more.

INTERGENERATIONAL FALL CLEAN-UP

As a joint event with the Rochester/Monroe County Youth Bureau, the Monroe County Office for the Aging held a kick-off breakfast on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Monroe Community Hospital for about 293 volunteers. These volunteers then went to the homes of 68 older adult residents throughout Monroe County to rake their lawns and bag leaves to prepare for winter. This event creates postiive youth development and allows our community's young adults to pay it forward and help an older adult in need.

ZOO's CLUES

As a joint event with the Rochester/Monroe County Youth Bureau, approximately 110 youth ages 7-15 and 90 older adult participants from area senior centers came together on July 13, 2018 at Seneca Park Zoo to visit the zoo animals while performing a scavenger hunt to learn about the animals and their habitat. 

​​​​This event helps bring together Monroe County's multiple generations to learn and grow from each other.

SPRING FLING

On May 23, 2018, 380 individuals age 60+, who participate in Monroe County's Senior Nutrition Program at area community and senior centers, came together at the Double Tree Hotel in Henrietta to celebrate Older American's Month. This event allowed the opportunity for Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and MCOFA staff to honor our community's older adults for their many contributions to our community.
