Household Batteries
NEWecopark can now recycle Lithium batteries. Click here for more info.
Common single-use alkaline or zinc batteries are generally NOT accepted for recycling and can be safely disposed of in the trash. Local Staples stores accept all single-use batteries, see the link below to visit their website. Click here for info on car battery recycling.
Swollen, expanded, or "puffy" batteries can be brought to ecopark for proper disposal, no appointment necessary. Make sure to keep these batteries in a cool and dry place before bringing them to ecopark. FOR ANY BATTERIES THAT ARE ACTIVELY SMOKING, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY.
It is illegal to dispose of rechargeable, button and sealed lead batteries in the trash. The NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Law requires manufacturers to provide free collection and recycling of rechargeable batteries, and any retailer that sells rechargeable batteries or products containing them must accept used batteries from consumers. Monroe County ecopark and retailers such as Best Buy, Lowes, Staples, Target, Verizon Wireless, etc. will accept certain types of rechargeable and button batteries for recycling. To prevent the risk of fire, use clear tape to cover the terminals before dropping them off at ecopark. Visit the sites listed below to find a convenient location to drop off your recyclable batteries. Check each site's list of accepted items to make sure your battery is accepted. Disposable alkaline and car batteries are generally not accepted.
