Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and New York State Assemblymember Jen Lunsford today announced they will host a Composting Resource Fair on Saturday July 22 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Fellow Road Park Shelter on 499 Fellows Road in Fairport. The fair is free and open to all ages.
"Landfills contribute 40% of our greenhouse gas emissions, so keeping waste out of landfills is an essential tool in our fight against climate change. Composting not only helps keep waste out of our landfills, but it also keeps odors down by removing organic waste, the cause of most odor issues,” said Assemblymember Lunsford. “That’s why we are so excited to offer this comprehensive resource to our community. We have so many partners here in Monroe County that make composting at-home easy! Between Cornell Cooperative Extension, who can teach you how to build a compost bin in your backyard, to Impact Earth who will pick up your food waste and compost it for you, we have options for every lifestyle."
“Composting is one of the most natural ways to recycle and give nutrients back to the earth. It’s one of the many tools in our disposal to fight climate change and reduce waste being sent to landfills,” said County Executive Bello. “Thank you to Assemblymember Lunsford for helping us create a fun and educational event for our families to explore ways they can help sustain our environment.”
Activities include:
-
Introductions to county and at-home composting resources
-
Interaction with live worms and worm education for all ages
-
Books, games, crafts and more for all ages on composting and sustainability
Participants at the resource fair include the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services, Cornell Cooperative Extension, BOCES 4 Science, Impact Earth, Color Penfield Green, Color Fairport Green, Mendon Library, Pittsford Community Library and the Monroe County Library System.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), composting is one of the most powerful actions residents can take to reduce trash, address climate change and build healthy soil.
The EPA shares some benefits of composting including:
-
It’s a resourceful way to recycle the food scraps and yard trim you generate at home all year and manage your waste more sustainably.
-
You reduce the volume of materials that might otherwise be disposed in landfills or trash incinerators - leaves, grass clippings, yard trim, and food scraps – and prevent powerful greenhouse gases from being emitted into the atmosphere.
-
Composting involves minimal effort, equipment, expense, and expertise, and can be fun.
-
Composting saves you money by producing a free, high quality soil amendment – reducing your use of fertilizer and pesticides.
-
You can use your compost to build healthier soil, prevent soil erosion, conserve water, and improve plant growth in your garden and yard.
