Reminder comes prior to National Flag Day
ROCHESTER, NY — In recognition of upcoming National Flag Day, County Executive Adam Bello reminds residents to retire unserviceable U.S. flags at the Monroe County/WM ecopark. Ripped, faded or tattered flags can be safely and honorably retired by turning them in with a no-appointment drop off at ecopark.
Monroe County’s partnership with Reworld, an energy from waste company located in Niagara Falls, allows for a proper retirement ceremony for all flags collected at the ecopark prior to incineration.
“It is typical for U.S. flags today to be made from materials such as nylon, as opposed to cotton, a material that is harmful when burned,” said County Executive Bello. “The ecopark provides a respectful way to retire unserviceable U.S. flags, while valuing patriotism and helping the environment.”
In the last 6 years, over 15 tons of flags, or 30,000 pounds, have been collected at the ecopark for retirement.
The Monroe County/WM ecopark is open from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, visit monroecounty.gov/ecopark/ or enable the Monroe County Recycling skill via Amazon’s Alexa Skill Store and ask Alexa.
