Description of Duties

This is a professional position in the medical social work field responsible for developing and implementing projects related to providing non-clinical medical social work services to patients* in a health care facility, and their families.  Duties involve determining the scope of social work services to be provided in helping patients adjust to their medical conditions and environment while following prescribed guidelines.  Duties also involve providing guidance to Medical Caseworkers on a daily basis, especially with sensitive or complex case issues.  This position differs from Medical Caseworker by virtue of providing primary coverage in the absence of the Medical Social Work Manager, assisting with administrative duties such as conducting competency assessments, ensuring employee completion of in-service training and adherence to the New York State Department of Health requirements, and performing quality assurance.  Psychotherapy is not an aspect of this position.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Medical Social Work Manager or other higher-level staff member with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in establishing methods and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s degree in Social Work or other behavioral science** field except Criminal Justice and Anthropology, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience performing social work or casework activities with a public or private organization which must in have been in the medical field; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or other behavioral science** field except Criminal Justice and Anthropology, plus three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience performing social work or casework activities with a public or private organization, at least one (1) year of which must have been in the medical field; OR, 
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

**Behavioral science, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications includes, but is not limited to, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, Gerontology, Human Behavior, Social Welfare and Vocational Rehabilitation.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.
