Monroe County, NY - Walk + Roll: A Child Safety Education Program in Monroe County

The Monroe County Safe Routes Child Walk and Bike Safety Education Program will help children and families feel more confident and prepared to safely walk, bike, and roll to school, recreation areas, and other everyday destinations.

The program is being developed with schools, educators, families, and community partners across Monroe County. By May 2027, the county will have practical resources and strategies that schools and families can use to support safer walking, biking, and rolling for children.

Why this project matters:

A child under age 15 has been killed while walking or biking in four of the last five years in Monroe County.
From 2023 to 2024, the number of children injured while walking or riding a bike rose by 24 percent.

Walk + Roll focuses on giving children and families the skills, habits, and confidence to travel safely.

What the program aims to do:

Create age-appropriate safety education materials tailored to local schools and communities for students in grades K-5.
Engage schools, educators, families, and community partners to understand needs and gather feedback.
Test and improve the materials through a school-based pilot program.
Create a flexible toolkit that schools can use and adapt to their own conditions.

Get Involved

There are several ways for families, educators, and community members to take part:

Take the survey. Tell us about safety concerns and how your family travels to school.
Come to a public meeting. Three community meetings will be held during the project.
Come to an event. Several experiential events (such as Bike Rodeos and Walk to School events) will take place at participating schools in the fall and spring of this 2026-2027 school year.
Share the project. Help spread the word to families and school staff in your community.

Project Timeline

Summer / Fall 2026: Project launch, countywide survey, experiential events.
Winter 2026-2027: Development of the K-5 safety education curriculum and toolkit.
Winter / Spring 2027: Pilot the materials in participating schools and evaluate results.
May 2027: Final program and toolkit ready to share countywide.

Who's Involved?

Walk + Roll is led by Monroe County, funded and coordinated through the Genesee Transportation Council (GTC), the region's metropolitan planning organization, with planning and engagement support from Highland Planning. The program builds on Monroe County's Safe Routes to School and the Office of Traffic Safety’s work.
