Description of Duties
This position, located at the Department of Transportation, is responsible for the oversight of the computerized traffic control center, troubleshooting problems, and taking corrective action. Duties involve planning and decision making in responding to traffic incidents and coordinating with other agencies, as well as monitoring traffic flow and the smooth operation of a computer operated traffic signal system. Duties also involve writing code, debugging, and running simple computer programs to adjust any problems encountered in the traffic signal system. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Chief of Traffic Signal Engineering and Operations or other higher-level staff member. General supervision is exercised over Traffic Control Operators. Does related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus; EITHER:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or an information technology, computer science, management information systems, emergency management, public safety, or transportation management field; OR,
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in monitoring or operating a computerized traffic management system, or with a transportation routing system; or dispatching; OR,
(C) Four (4) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as described in (B) above; OR,
(D) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.
