Monroe County Executive Adam Bello today announced the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency (COMIDA) is investing $300,000 with the 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU) United Healthcare Workers union to create and operate a one-year training program for current and prospective healthcare workers. SEIU will place those completing the training in union jobs with benefits including healthcare and childcare and opportunities for career advancement.

“Working with SEIU is part of my administration’s effort to address the ongoing staffing crisis in healthcare and engaging COMIDA to help train our workforce for the jobs the agency is creating,” said County Executive Bello. “Thank you to the COMIDA and board chair Ann Burr, as well as SEIU and Larry Knox their partnership in growing our healthcare workforce.”

The program includes recruitment, pre-training preparation, case management, training, certification, and job placement. Recruitment will target 65% of community residents and 35% currently-employed (1199SEIU) workers from historically underserved communities of color.

“COMIDA understands the importance of having a strong, skilled local healthcare workforce,” said COMIDA board chair Ann Burr. “Thank you to County Executive Bello and his leadership for making this investment possible and to our partners in 1199SEIU for bolstering our talent pool of skilled healthcare professionals.”

“Our partnership with COMIDA will help expand healthcare career opportunities to all Monroe county residents, providing complete wrap around services to ensure success,” said Tracey Harrison, 1199SEIU vice-president for Rochester/Corning Division. “We are pleased that Monroe County will invest in building a true career path for our healthcare workforce. This partnership will help to provide students the support they need to overcome barriers and to be successful including access to adult education, childcare, career support and job readiness in entry level positions such as Certified Nurse Assistant, Patient Care Technician, and Phlebotomy.”

1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers is a healthcare union with a membership of 400,000 including retirees.
