Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) today announced that Avelo Airlines is adding nonstop service to Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) in upstate South Carolina. This is Avelo’s second destination out of ROC, which began nonstop service to Raleigh/Durham International Airport (RDU) in 2023. Additionally, Avelo will be expanding its nonstop service to RDU to four times a week, providing greater convenience and affordability to passengers looking to travel to the North Carolina’s Research Triangle.

“For anyone looking to travel between upstate New York and upstate South Carolina, look no further than ROC’s newest nonstop service to Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport on Avelo Airlines. Like Monroe County and the Finger Lakes, the Greenville/Spartanburg area is home to an abundance of outdoor recreational attractions, unique dining, shopping and entertainment venues, and access to major colleges and universities. You can feel the synergy between our two communities, and we hope that this new nonstop service will bring out more partnerships and travel opportunities for our residents,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello.

Avelo will begin service to GSP on May 9 and will operate this route twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, making it the perfect option for a long weekend getaway. The Greenville/Spartanburg is a rapidly growing community with a population near 900,000 residents. The 2023 U.S. News & World Report ranked Spartanburg, SC the 12th and Greenville, SC the 23rd fastest growing cities in the country.

The region is home to attractions like the BMW Zentrum and Performance Center, a number of Revolutionary War sites, over 100 fabulous shops and restaurants, and many other outdoor entertainment and recreation opportunities. Additionally, GSP provides easy access to other nearby areas and attractions such as: Clemson, SC; Asheville, NC; Columbia, SC; Athens GA; and August, GA.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “ROC – Avelo is growing! We’re excited to introduce nonstop service between Rochester and Greenville / Spartanburg. Whether visiting friends and family or enjoying a leisurely vacation, Avelo offers time and money-saving convenience for Customers. This exclusive nonstop service will also make exploring ROC’s historic museums and internationally recognized festivals a fast and seamless journey for Upstate South Carolina visitors.”

“Upstate New York, welcome to Upstate South Carolina. Our nonstop service between these two regions opens a gateway to exploration, inviting travelers to discover the mountains, southern charm, and the vibrant dining scene that defines our beloved Greenville-Spartanburg area,” said Tom Tyra, Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. “As we celebrate this connection, we are confident that Upstate South Carolina travelers will be drawn the adventures awaiting them in Rochester.”
