Tips for Older Adults during the Autumn Season:
Ensure Safe Outdoor Walkways
- Make sure walkways are clear of leaves, sticks, and other obstacles
- Install proper lighting- motion-sensor lights can be helpful in reducing the risks of tripping
- Rake safely. Make sure to have sturdy shoes with good traction, and use ergonomic tools to avoid overexertion
Prepare for Cooler Temperatures
- Dress in layers to combat flucuating temperatures throughout the day
- Make sure heating systems are working properly. Space heaters should be used cautiously and never left unattended.
- Stay hydrated and drink water regularly- even if you don't feel thirsty
Prevent Seasonal Illness
- Get a flu shot early in the season
- Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and vitamins that boost your immunity and support immune health
- Keep hand sanitizer accessible, and wash hands frequently to reduce the spread of germs
Fall Activities to Enjoy
- Slow-paced nature walks and scenic drives through a park
- Autumn crafts and decorations
- Seasonal Cooking and Baking
- Create a cozy indoor environment for reading, watching a movie, or having a conversation over a warm cup of tea
