Description of Duties

This is a technical position responsible for gathering, managing, and manipulating spatial data in a geographic information system (GIS) environment in a municipality.  Duties include performing field work, and working in various weather conditions and on uneven terrain.  This position differs from the lower level title Geographic Information Systems Technician by virtue of its increased level of technical complexity in all aspects of GIS.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Manager of Operations – GIS or other higher level staff member. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, PLUS, either:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems,     Geography, Environmental Science, Planning, Imaging Science, Computer Science or a closely related field including six (6) college  semester credit hours in geographic information systems (GIS) plus either six (6) months paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** work experience or two (2) quarters or one (1) semester of cooperative education (co-op) work experience* involving geographic information systems (GIS) that includes data conversion, data creation, feature editing, data analysis, creating reports AND cartography; OR,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's or Master’s degree plus either: one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience or four (4) quarters or two (2) semesters of cooperative education (co-op) experience* working with geographic information systems (GIS) that includes data conversion, data creation, feature editing, data analysis, creating reports AND cartography; OR,
  3. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems or an Associate's degree plus three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience working with geographic information systems (GIS) that includes data conversion, data creation, feature editing, data analysis, creating reports AND cartography; OR,
  4. Five (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience working with geographic information systems (GIS) that includes data conversion, data creation, feature editing, data analysis, creating reports AND cartography; OR,
  5. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C) and (D) above.

*Co-op experience can be paid or unpaid.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.

Special Requirements:

If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid New York State license to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.
