Description of Duties

This is a professional position in a school district responsible for evaluating, planning and directing music activities designed to provide positive learning experiences leading to increased comprehension of self and environment for students with disabilities (ages 3 to 21 years).  Students are referred to special education programs from physicians, therapists and teachers.  The employee works closely with parents and teaching staff to aide in planning music activities according to student's needs, capabilities and interests.  Therapy is provided in groups or on an individual basis.  The employee works under the general supervision of and reports directly to the administrator of special education programs.  Direct supervision is exercised over teacher aides assigned to the class.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy.

Special Requirements:

Possession of (or eligible for) a Certification as a Music Therapist by the Certification Board For Music Therapists, Inc. at time of appointment.   Note:  This credential is granted when an individual: 1. meets the academic requirement of successfully completing a degree in music therapy at a recognized college or university; 2.  successfully completes a clinical internship in music therapy at an approved facility; and, 3.  passes a national examination that is administered every November.

Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test for employment with Monroe County Government.

Anticipated Eligibility – Age and Educational Requirements:

According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met. Candidates will be required to provide proof of qualifying education and/or age within 12 months of exam date in order to be eligible for appointment from a certified list.
