Dinolfo Urges Caution During Extremely Cold Winter Weather

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo is urging residents to use additional caution due to extreme winter weather. Temperatures are not expected to rise over 20 degrees in the next 10 days and the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory through 7:00PM tonight as well as a wind chill advisory through Thursday afternoon.

“The first extended period of extremely cold temperatures has arrived and it’s important that residents take precautions to remain safe,” said Dinolfo. “The County’s Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the situation, is in contact with state, city, town and village officials and will provide additional guidance as warranted. Residents should monitor local television and radio for the most up-to-the-minute updates on conditions and should adhere to these safety tips for the duration of the weather event.”

To stay safe during these extreme winter weather conditions, Dinolfo and the Monroe County Office of Emergency Management offer these tips:
· Stay Informed – check the news for further emergency information and up-to-date information on weather conditions.
· Drive for Road Conditions – allow plenty of time to slow down.
· Be Prepared – keep a warm blanket, water and other supplies in your vehicle in the event of being stranded. Keep tail pipe clear so that Carbon Monoxide doesn’t build up in the car. Keep tires inflated and gas tanks at least half-full.
· Dress Appropriately – wear loose, lightweight and warm clothing in several layers; also wear hats and gloves.
· Check Symptoms of Hypothermia – include inability to concentrate, poor coordination, slurred speech, drowsiness, exhaustion and shivering.
· Avoid Frostbite – If you must go outside, cover every part of your body, including ears, nose, toes and fingers. Keep your skin dry and stay out of the wind when possible. Stay hydrated.
· Clear Fire Hydrants of Snow
· Keep Dryer and Chimney Vents Clear – prevents fires and gas build-up.
· Be a Good Neighbor - Periodically check on elderly or mobility impaired friends and neighbors.
