Fire Lieutenant
Description of Duties
This position, located in a fire district, is responsible for overseeing and directing firefighting and emergency response activities involving the protection of life and property during a shift and during the absence of a Fire Captain or Fire Chief. Work is performed in accordance with the policies and objectives outlined by the Board of Fire Commissioners and/or Fire Chief. This position differs from Firefighters by virtue of its performance of directing activities of staff during a shift. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Fire Captain, Fire Chief, or other higher level staff member. Lead supervision is exercised over Firefighters and Laborers.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class at one of the agencies listed above and must have served continuously for thirty-six (36) months holding the position of Firefighter immediately preceding the date of the written test. Provisional time served immediately before a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited.
Barnard Fire District:
Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class at the Barnard Fire District and must have served continuously for thirty-six (36) months holding the position of Firefighter/Paramedic or Firefighter immediately preceding the date of the written test. Provisional time served immediately before a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited.
A combination of time served in multiple titles sufficient to meet the maximum period of required service is also qualifying.
Irondequoit Fire District:
Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class at the Irondequoit Fire District for thirty (30) months holding the position of Firefighter immediately preceding the date of the written test. Provisional time served immediately before a permanent appointment to the same title(s) will be credited.
Any person, otherwise meeting the requirements for an examination, who was laid off from an agency for which the examination is being held, and whose name is presently on a preferred list is eligible to compete in the examination. When completing the application, such person should be sure to indicate his/her present employment and/or the title and location of his/her last permanent employment in the municipality.
